Last week, I lost another one of my mentors, Jerry Bender, who passed away in Los Angeles. Jerry was simply one of the most brilliant men I have ever had the privilege to meet. I was among one of many he mentored, not only about Angola and Africa, but about life. I will miss his wit, his insight on so many issues, and his humor. One of the real highlights of my career was being with Jerry in the weeks leading up to Angola’s first-ever democratic elections in October 1992.
He was my go-to source on all things Angola for decades, widely-acknowledged as the premier scholar on that troubled country. Jerry traveled widely and was loved and respected by so many people all over the world. He is greatly missed.
