It’s been ten days since protests erupted across Egypt, with Egyptians of diverse backgrounds loudly demanding the end of Hosni Mubarak’s regime. Before that, protests in Tunisia forced president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali into exile. Will Mubarak cling tightly to power until the promised September elections? If he leaves, who fills the power vacuum? What do these events mean for the Arab world, and for America’s relationships in the Middle East? Today Sheilah discusses Egypt with I. William Zartman, professor emeritus at the Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, and we hear the story of how Baltimore native Ellen Brooks fled her home and job in Cairo on January 31. Make sure to read WYPR’s own Sunni Khalid’s take at The Root on why these protests started in the first place.
